We can’t wait to celebrate with you in the heart of South Africa’s wine country.

To help make your journey as seamless as possible, here’s everything you need to know about getting to the Cape Winelands — whether you're coming from near or far.

When should I arrive in Cape Town?

For guests coming from the US, we recommend arriving on a flight that lands on Wednesday evening (March 18). That gives you time to settle in before the festivities begin on Thursday evening. For guests traveling from other cities in South Africa, plan to arrive in Cape Town on Thursday afternoon.

When should I plan to depart Cape Town?

Most flights from Cape Town to the US depart in the early evening, so booking a Sunday evening flight will allow you to enjoy the last of the wedding festivities before heading home. If you'd like to spend a bit more time exploring South Africa, we'd recommend staying until Wednesday or Thursday. This will give you time to explore more of Cape Town while you're here.

When are the bride and groom arriving?

We'll be arriving in Cape Town the Monday before the wedding (March 16), and leaving on the following Thursday (March 26).

Where should I stay?

We recommend that guests stay near the V&A Waterfront area of Cape Town — we will be staying at the ONEHUNDRED on M, 100 Main Rd., 8005 Cape Town, South Africa. We will add more information about other places and neighborhoods shortly!

If I'm coming from the US, do I need to get a visa or any vaccinations before I arrive?

US passport holders do not need a visa to come to South Africa! Just be sure your passport has two blank pages and is valid for at least 30 days after departure (we recommend 6 months to be safe). We have also never needed to get any specific vaccines to travel to and around South Africa, but of course recommend asking your doctor before you travel if you have any concerns.

When should I book my flights, and how much should I expect to pay?

We recommend booking your flights any time between now and January for the best rate. According to ChatGPT, $1,300-$1,800 is a typical price for a flight in economy from the US to Cape Town. That tracks with our experience, although prices may be a little higher or lower depending on the dates you play around with.

How can I make this loooooooooong flight bearable?

First off — it's really not that bad! Second — we prefer flights that go straight from the US to South Africa. This typically means that you'll need to take a domestic flight to either DC, Newark, or Atlanta, and then get on a ~15 hour flight to Cape Town. Sleep aids like melatonin, eye masks, earplugs, and a cozy blanket or travel pillow make sleeping much easier! We find that just getting the long portion of the travel over with in one go makes getting there much nicer, so look for these flights if you're worried about travel time. Other options are to fly through Europe, breaking the trip up into a 7ish-hour flight and a 10ish-hour flight; or fly through the Middle East. Those flights tend to be a bit cheaper, but usually involve very long layovers in Dubai — increasing your overall travel time significantly.

What's the weather like in Cape Town and the Winelands in late March?

It will be like late summer in the US — highs in the mid 70s and lows in the 60s.

What should I wear to the wedding?

First and foremost, something you feel comfortable in! We'll be both indoors (ceremony, dinner, reception) and outdoors (walking around the beautiful gardens of Babylonstoren), so flats or block heels will be better choices than stilettos. The wedding is a great excuse to dress up a bit, but there's no need to be too formal. Think linen or lightweight suits or dress pants for the gents, and midi or maxi dresses with flowy silhouettes for the ladies.

How will we get from Cape Town to Babylonstoren?

We will have shuttles that will pick guests up at the V&A Waterfront and drive guests to Babylonstoren. We'll also have transport back to Cape Town throughout the evening for guests to return to their hotels.

What airport should I fly into?

Cape Town International airport (CPT).

Will my phone work in South Africa? What about my chargers — do I need adapters?

South Africa has type 'M' outlets — similar to Europe. It's easiest to get an adapter like this: bit.ly/4p9igpv that can be used to plug in multiple devices using your US chargers. Depending on your phone plan, you might be covered in South Africa. You can also get an eSIM before you travel from companies like Vodafone.

What's the currency in South Africa? Do I need to exchange cash beforehand?

South Africa uses the Rand, and R1,000 is roughly $50 USD. Credit cards are widely accepted, but if you would like to have cash on you as well, we would recommend withdrawing some at the airport once you land in Cape Town for the best exchange rate.

Is it safe to use public transit in Cape Town?

No — we don’t recommend using public transit in Cape Town. While many locals rely on it, the systems (including trains and minibus taxis) can be unpredictable and are not considered reliably safe for visitors, especially those unfamiliar with the city. For convenience and peace of mind, we strongly suggest using Uber, Bolt, or pre-arranged transportation. These options are widely used, affordable, and much more tourist-friendly.

If I want to spend time in South Africa after the wedding, what should I do?

We've thought long and hard about this recommendation, because there are truly so many wonderful things to see, do, and explore in SA. Given our home base of Cape Town during this trip, we would recommend spending extra time on your trip exploring Cape Town and the winelands (see our 'Things to Do' section). It's called the Mother City for a reason!
